Smoothies are very popular these days because they taste great and offer amazing health benefits. For one thing, most people do not eat enough servings of healthy produce every day, and smoothies provide a way to enjoy a couple of servings of both fruit and veggies in one tasty and refreshing glass.
To make a smoothie in your own kitchen, you will need a decent blender. Crushing ice is usually a tough task for a cheap blender, so investing in a blender that advertises that it can crush ice is a wise move. Besides that, all you need is ice to crush and and an assortment of other ingredients.
Frozen bananas are one thing you will want to have on hand. Simply peel ripe bananas, put them in a freezer bag, and store them in your freezer. You may want to break them in a few pieces to make them easier to blend. Bananas provide a good texture and thickness to your smoothie, and they almost taste like ice cream after they have been frozen.
Other Fruit And Vegetables
Carrots are actually naturally sweet. They add an almost berry-like flavor when added to a frozen banana in a smoothie. Other good smoothie choices are grapes, berries, and even applies. With grapes and berries, you might also decide to keep a stock that is already frozen, but you can add them from the fridge too.
Making Your Fresh Smoothie From Home
Add about 1/2 to 1 frozen banana and about 1 cup of ice. Then add enough milk or milk alternative (i.e. soy, almond, etc.) to the blender to cover this. Add in a handful of other fruit and vegetables too. Blend until your smoothie has the smooth consistency that it has been named for.
Made this way, your drink will be just slightly sweet. If you would like it sweeter, you can add a packet of Stevia, a teaspoon of honey, or other sweeteners. Of course, sugar works, but it is healthier to avoid processed sugar if possible.
Benefits Of Making Smoothies At Home
If you buy a smoothie when you are out, you have no control over the ingredients. You have no way to know if fresh fruits and vegetables are used. You also have no way to know if a lot of sugar has been added. Plus, it’s cheaper to make these at home.
